The 2023 Rose is made using hand-picked Pinot Noir grown by Juliet Cullen at Excelsior Peak Vineyard at an elevation of 630m in the southern part of Tumbarumba (Western slopes of the Snowy Mountains).

The fruit was destemmed and left to soak overnight, before being basket pressed to keep the wine soft and ethereal. It was cold-fermented to retain fruit and aromatics in old oak puncheons.

Both primary and full malolactic fermentation took place naturally with indigenous yeasts/bacteria, and a modest addition of SO2 was used at the end of fermentation before being matured for 12 months in barrel.

Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tart strawberry jam, lychee and light florals on the nose make way for a juicy palate that makes you salivate after every sip. Both thirst-quenching and also quite serious and considered, it will be a pleasant accompaniment on a summers day, but also provoke thought if taken more seriously.

Pinot Noir has always been my favourite variety for Rose. There is both a fullness and an elegance, and a complexity that I rarely see in Rose made from other varieties. Commonly exuding floral and spice, but with enough fruit in tow to be contextualised and balanced.
